Analyst Brief Validates the Need for Flexible and Composable Approach to Data Management and Analytics


Today we are announcing an IDC Analyst Brief we commissioned titled Unified Data Platform Weaves Distributed, Diverse and Dynamic Data in Modern Environments (doc #US49713522, September 2022), which validates the need for a flexible and composable approach to data management and analytics.

Now, more than ever, organizations face mounting pressure from the c-suite to deliver real value for their massive data investments. Too often, companies follow a piecemeal approach when purchasing technology and data solutions. This product or tool-centric method requires lots of integrations and creates a highly rigid architecture. It also leads to costly challenges when integrating legacy systems and requires high-skilled resources to manage. 

The Modern Data Company built DataOS in response to the increasing complexity these organizations must navigate as they attempt to operationalize their data. DataOS is a unified, open platform that overlays existing architectures — including legacy systems — to enable data interoperability. This approach provides a data-centric architecture instead of one based on bolting products together to create a semblance of a data ecosystem. The IDC Analyst Brief emphasizes that a collection of point solutions needs a unified data ecosystem to enable organizations to extract maximum value from their existing tools. This approach allows businesses to stop focusing on infrastructure and increase data literacy throughout the organization. It ensures organizations can secure value from data to optimize operational efficiency, personalization and customization to drive consumer engagement, product design, and innovative research and development.

The brief emphasizes four pillars that are fundamental to DataOS:

  • Modern composable architecture: Organizations must unify dispersed and dynamic data using composable, integrated architectural solutions. This can range from data fabric to data mesh to CDP. DataOS features a composable architecture that makes all of the above (and more) possible in a matter of weeks, not years. 
  • A modern layer over legacy systems: Much of an organization’s data distribution and diversity has grown out of the need to manage current data alongside legacy data. DataOS overlays and connects any data source to enable modern governance and activation.
  • Data analysis without data movement: By enabling analysis without data movement, DataOS eliminates the need to move all enterprise data into a single repository for analysis, which is neither practical nor affordable.
  • Outcome-based data engineering: When quality data is made accessible with proper governance, every team member can use data to make trusted decisions. DataOS takes it further with outcome-based engineering and empowers non-technical users to define their desired outcomes. DataOS automatically gets the required data without the need to write pipelines.

Most data scientists spend only 20% of their time on actual data analysis and 80% of their time finding, cleaning, and reorganizing vast amounts of data, according to expert reports. Surveys conducted by IDC also support the need for a new, more efficient approach to data. 

  • IDC’s Worldwide Future of Intelligence Survey found that the top two barriers to increasing enterprise intelligence are the lack of a long-term strategy and the inability to synthesize internal and external data sources 
  • Only a third of data-oriented staff workers said their decisions and actions were data-driven in IDC’s 2021 data culture survey. 
  • Additional IDC survey results indicate that 65% of organizations are using at least 10 different data engineering and intelligence tools to integrate data from up to 10 different data management technologies.
